How can I exercise biblical decision-making when selecting a candidate?

In responding to your question, my response is based upon the premise of “when I vote” (not if I vote). Considering a Christians interaction with government there are 3 clear biblical commands:

1) Paying our taxes - Mark 12:17; Matthew 17:24-27

2) Praying for political leaders – 1st Timothy 2:1-3

3) Honor God by submitting yourself to rulers – 1st Peter 2:13,14, 17

Having said the above, there is no biblical command to vote, yet I believe God does desire His people to live responsibly and peaceably in this life and to be “good” citizens. In this country, God has allowed its citizens (over time) the opportunity to vote. Voting in this country allows its citizens to express their civic duty and voice their opinion. So, when a Christian votes for the leader of their country (and members of the legislature) what are biblical principles that cross the political “divide” where we know from scripture where God stands:

1) God created life and values life – Gen 1:26-28

2) God created marriage and the family – Gen. 2:24

3) God created government for order that we may live peaceable lives – 1st Tim 2:2

So, our decision should align with values that are indisputable from the word of God and the candidate that bests aligns with those beliefs regardless of party affiliation.

But we should be careful not to place our faith or hope in man’s government. One of Satan’s greatest deceptions is that we can rest our hope for cultural morality or change in politicians and government officials. The church makes a mistake if it thinks it is the job of politicians to defend, advance or guard biblical truths and Christian values. Nowhere in the scriptures have I found a command to spend our time, energy and resources on a “political movement.” Only as the hearts of individuals in a culture are changed by Christ will the culture begin to reflect lasting change.
