The bulk of this chapter is about the sower, the lamp and the growth. While Jesus tells this parable, he was actively engaged in the very action at that moment –sowing the word. Let me quickly give you an overview before reading our text. Jesus opens with a parable –illustration that is more intended to test then to illuminate. But he was not testing their intelligence, as much as their spiritual responsiveness as hearers. In this he is teaching even another lesson “to one who already has something, even more will be given (25). Farmers sow seed. 1) Along a path –birds came and eat it; birds are often clean up agents in scriptures. 2) Some fell on shallow soil and was soon scorched. 3) Some seed fell on weedy infested soil and was chocked out. 4) Then there was the seed that fell on good soil and produced a harvest. One very quick observation; hearing the word does not bring about the same results in every heart. Read Text In Matt 5 Jesus shared that it rains on the just and unjust alike- again demonstrating God sends his word to all, whether they will hear or not. In our lesson today we see seed as the word of God-sent by the God of the word to fall on different sorts of ground “hearts”. Hard hearts, the shallow hearts, the over cluttered hearts, and the good- or prepared hearts are all sent the good seed, or word. In 9 Jesus put out a warning, let him hear: this parable requires thought and action in response, let us not dismiss it lightly without applying its truth to our own hearts. After all that is what three groups of those in our parable- lesson had done, that’s the majority of Jesus’ crowd. ¾ While Jesus spoke in parables, it was not in an attempt to obscure the truth. No, Jesus says in 25 who would light a lamp and them deliberately hide it? He say to take heed what you hear; to those who learn, and pass on to others, then even more will be given. Jesus while in a parable talks about one sowing, he is in process right then of sowing the word that is meant to bring growth in us all. Paul, expands our understanding we are all sowers. Galatians 6:7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Words of Eliphaz in Job 4:8 As I have observed, those who plow evil and those who sow trouble reap it. Proverbs 11:18 A wicked person earns deceptive wages, but the one who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward. Proverbs 22:8 Whoever sows injustice reaps calamity, and the rod they wield in fury will be broken Hosea 10:12 Sow righteousness for yourselves, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the Lord, until he comes and showers his righteousness on you. You reap what you sow and we all sow! What Jesus is talking to us about is sowing –THE WORD! Ok back to our lesson: there are other principles of sowing reaping, of which I briefly alluded to on the retreat. 1st is what we just discussed you always reap; what you sow. Don’t think you can sow rebellion to the WOG and reap favor from the GOW! Good New Gospel is that at any time you can sow a new crop! Repent-turn around, turn over a new leaf, (Gospel) turn from sin and self and turn to Him alone! Next is the 2nd principle (?) you always reap after you sow! It takes time to grow character, to grow a church or anything else. Then 3rd (?) you always reap more than you sow. 20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.” The seed is sown to all but it is the seed that grows we are concentrating on in the parable. Let me talk to you about apples: because I like apples. I through an apple seed out my car window into the medium on my way to church, because I thought it would be so nice to be able to drive by & pick me one. I even swallowed one on accident, but (?) so I got to thinking- Seeds per Apple: What the Expert Says: Size in not relevant. Apples have five seed pockets or carpels. Each pocket contains seeds. The number of seeds per carpel is determined by the health of the plant. Different varieties of apples will have different number of seeds. Cut an apple show the seed sacks. Apples per tree, per season: Depending on many different factors (environmental conditions, pollination success, variety, rootstock, etc.), an apple tree might produce, we can estimate more than 1,000 apples per tree. Years per tree: Many trees begin bearing after 3 year and live long enough that your great-grandchildren can harvest fruit. How much greater are you than an apple tree? Can you bear fruit for generations? 2 Corinthians 9:6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Let’s Plant a seed together! ¾ of the seed didn’t bear fruit. Now let’s plant a church together too! Now accountants only help me out, I want to make sure my figures are correct! 100 people in here are good sowers because you have received the WOG in your hearts! Let’s take these 100 people and I tell you to be careful to be obedient to the WOG take action and sow into others. 100 invite 100 each to the house of the Lord this year! How many would receive an invite, if all obedient (?) 10K that’s outrages, no one can expect us to invite 10K people, I do! Accountants help me out week in a year 52, I will give everyone 2 weeks off, this week because you are just hearing this, and another of your choosing, maybe vacation week. How many weeks left-50, 100\ 50 (2) invites per week 10k invites to our church. If we look for a reasonable marketing plan, success of 3% (?) 300 actually accepts and shows up as our guest. I believe, what I think you do too; we’re a pretty loving warm group. Let’s say that we could retain 1/3 of the ones that actually come (?) 100 and that’s the low end of return on investment in the spiritual realm. 20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.” Jesus did not hide the fact nor was he ashamed to admit not ever seed bore good fruit. More importantly, he would not have us discouraged in our sewing-spreading the Word. So in one year we would double our congregation, to 200. We shouldn’t ask how many seeds in an apple but how many apples in a seed. How many of you will committee with me today to sow into the Kingdom growth that Jesus in talking to us about in this lesson today? Stand with me, Pray with me, go tell with me! “Anyone can count the number of seeds in an apple… but only God can count the number of apples in a seed.” -Robert Schuller
