Pastor Timothy Corder leads his church in a brief study of James 4. James writes to warn against boastfulness. Now Pastor teaches how we are able to anything. The will of God is powerful! “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”

James warns us of Boasting About Tomorrow
13 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. 17 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.
It is not by mistake that we are here- looking at this passage just before the beginning of the New Year! Many of you know I have been reading through the Bible every year since before I can remember in my Christian walk. I have also been encouraging you to do so as well. A few weeks ago I came across the story of Daniel in the lion’s den.  A story well known to all, but I saw something new, today in Zachariah the same. I shared not to long back with you that one of the objectives of the HS is to bring back to our remembrance all things concerning Jesus that we have need of, yet I noted he can’t bring to your remembrance what was never put in there in the first place, thus also you can’t make full use of the counsel of God if you don’t have complete access to the fullness of his word.
13 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or… when someone says to me NOW LISTEN-they usually add (here Buddy)-now listen here buddy, next a warning to come. Come now [and pay attention to this], you who say, (Amp). Vs. 14 says you don’t know the least thing, about anything. This is a reality check for all of us, we may set the alarm before we lay down for the night fully expecting to raise early and tackle the new day that we have planned to rule over, when before we know it the day we thought we were to awaken to, never materialized but rather this one did instead.  One that possibly began several hours earlier than the one we were expecting, yet quickly we realize we have not gotten any of the world changing things done we intended to, that day.
Carpe diem is a Latin phrase for "seize the day", most of us will have to admit that we make plans and then set out to seize the opportunities to bring our plans to fruition.  Linda Waters once said to me Pastor, God showed me today; THIS is THE day the Lord has made, rejoice and be glad in IT!  It’s not about the day we want to be glad in and rejoice about, that the Lord has made it, the way we like it. It is about rejoicing in and being glad for the day the Lord has made, however it turns out. “Play the card you have been dealt”.
The later part of 14, goes on to ask the question what is your life?  Then the scripture answers its own inquiry, ‘You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes’. It’s hard to hold on to fog, vapor a mist! If you think you have it open your hands and behold it’s not there.
15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” If our lives are slipping away and could vanish at any time, shouldn’t we always make sure with whatever time we have we are doing the Lord’s will first of all? Matthew’s gospel put it this way 6:“33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
James 4:16 As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. 17 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them. To know to do good and not do it, to him it is sin!!! That’s kind of like get your homework done first then if you have time left over you can go out and play. Like live out your life doing what the Lord has shown you, what is consistent with the Lords will and the Lord heart, and then your desires will be formulated and met in HIM! Zechariah’s “gospel” is all about proclaiming that we are not to lose site of the purpose of God’s deliverance.  Finish the construction of the temple and encourage each other to walk closer in obedience to God!  Zechariah- means God remembers; what this whole book the Bible, has been placed before us as believers for, is to remember God’s purposes and obey his will.
Prov. 19:21 Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.
If you want to be successful, join the winner’s side and do what the coach directs you to do!
Psalm 37:4 Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Let’s commit to 2016 to: “Do as you’ve seen Him Do! Not my will but thy will be done!

Let’s come around this alter this morning and commit our ways to the LORD for the coming year! Amen!!!! If you need specific prayer you can come to myself or another to pray with you, but don’t leave here this morning before taking some time to commit your ways to the Lord!
